You could try that, or you could take the sparse image and try using hdiutil to split it in the directly supported (by Apple) way.
But, either will work. Note, though, that I'd generally suggest a second FireWire drive. They're faster and very stable -- especially when off. Plus, they're not too expensive, when you take your time into consideration..
