OK. Well -- what I'd suggest is erasing the drive 'normally' with Disk Utility, then restoring *without* the erase checked. I've verified this here again, and it *does* work, for me, at least.
Thanks for the advice... I actually restored it using Time Machine but will bear it in mind for the future. In actual fact the fix for the original problem was pretty straightforward...
