new HD install - copying files stops

I have used Super Duper without problems in the past, but have just replaced the HD in my MBP and while using the erase-copy or smart update to copy the files from my 120 gb firewire drive to the new HD, it has seemed stuck in the same place twice. the end of the logfile reads like this:
| 01:26:41 PM | Info | /
| 01:26:45 PM | Info | /cores
| 01:26:45 PM | Info | /private
| 01:26:47 PM | Info | Ignoring /private/var/vm/sleepimage
| 01:26:50 PM | Info | Ignoring /private/var/vm/swapfile0

the time elapsed is 1 hour 24 minutes this time, I aborted and re-tried it after 47 minutes the first time. both times it gets to the same point: 3.64 evaluated and 1.58 copied to the new hard drive at a rate of 19.21 mb/sec.

no spinning beach balls, and I can use the firewire drive Leopard OS and several applications as if they were on the HD in order to send this request for help...

Thanks for being responsive on this forum, it seems like a great resource.
