The rollout’s going well, though it totally killed my entire birthday—I’ve been SuperDuper!ing from about 7am until now (11:43pm), non-stop except for a 40 minute break for dinner.
People seem to be really liking it, though:
- We have about 10 users who have reported a weird, crashes-as-soon-as-it-starts problem we’ve been unable to reproduce or figure out
- Two users are reporting another weird crash with a pop-up
- And a few people running into a bug where we don’t list Apple-created RAID sets as possible source or destination volumes (we do work, though, with SoftRAID).
Considering what 2.0 contains, that’s awfully good… but I’m totally exhausted. I think I responded to over 300 support cases today, some up to 30 round-trips, and it takes its toll. There will be a 2.0.1 in relatively short order to address these initial release issues.
Anyway, gotta sleep. If I’m slower tomorrow, it’s because it’s Thanksgiving and I’m going to take part of the day for that… thanks, everyone, for the reception you’ve given the new version!

You can add me to the crashing folks not at startup but after about 5 minutes on a SmartUpdate. No log for the session. Subsequent runs have been fine though twice the usual time. The last run was with previous version and time was likewise lengthy. Haven’t bothered with detailed examination of logs for these sessions. Will report if anything untoward is noted.

If possible, Tim, please locate the crash log (which should be in Library/Logs/CrashReporter as “SuperDuper!.crash.log” off your Home folder) and send it in to support.
Thanks.

Looks like a very nice release. Now I have to find a machine to restore one of the backups to, just for practice…

Thanks, Brad—we’re pretty pleased with it!

As regards post#2: There is nothing in Crashreporter, but nevermind about that. I was just doing a SmartUpdate and got to wondering again and so fired up Activity Monitor (this after about 8 minutes and not even a third of the way through a SU that should just be updating some Preferences, bookmarks, and email. AM showed SDCopy as not responding (as it did the first run I did with Version 2 (v75) as noted in #1 above). This time I just let it alone and after a few minutes SDCopy was responding and things started progressing. So, I decide to look into the logs. There aren’t any logs! There is nothing but the logs from v74.

SDCopy not responding doesn’t mean anything, since it has no UI component, Tim: it’s not the same as SuperDuper!’s UI.
The logs aren’t where you’re expecting, being an “old user”. Press Cmd-l when in SD! and you’ll see the log in the new log viewer.

Yeah, I figured the not responding was a fluke-ish thing. As for the new logs thang: Why? Where are they stored? Why not keep it all “standard?” Will look into them later for my particular issue Re: time of SU.

Because this way, we can prune them, improve our support by keeping relevant information in the settings, and do things like color errors so people can find them more easily…

All well and good as far as it goes. But because of what’s going on I want to see at least the last three sessions. I can’t, unless I’m doing something wrong.
26 Nov 2005 at 08:57 pm | #
They’re actually there, but there’s not any UI presently. You can open the settings package and see all the files in the Logs subfolder. (Control-click on the package, choose Show Package Contents.)
Or, if you’re doing this to keep track of the last three because there are three volumes, create separate settings and then you’ll have all three logs.

OK. I can do this, but IMHO I think making it a bit more accessible would be a good thing - perhaps using Preferences to make it so (e.g. leaving the present as default but allowing flexibility for others).

It’s not typically something people need, but we’re looking at various options for future versions, Tim.

Good enough. In my case I’m wondering why “all of a sudden” my daily SU took almost twice as long. More, an immediiate second SU, I do mean *immedaie*, with nothing changing other than seconds of time passing, still takes that long, when the last SU done with old SD! was half the time. So, I need to get off my duff and look at the last “short-time” SU log from old SD! and compare to last 2 SU logs of new SD!. Guess I’ll finally do it tomrrow so I can move on.
Oh! And, BTW, once again,THANK YOU! for your (and Bruce’s) good work.

I don’t know. All our internal tests show that SD2 is as fast or faster than the previous version… check to see how many files are copied, etc…
26 Nov 2005 at 10:12 pm | #
Will do. The last time i thought something was untowards it was one huge iMovie file with strange permissions. I was also messing with CarbonCopyCloner. That issue shouldn’t be here as i use SD! exclusively. Off-hand I just can’t remember anything changing so much that the time would double. Will let you know.

OK. Let’s take it over to the discussions forum or to support: this is not as useful a place to do this kind of support stuff, Tim.
